Creative Advertising

Good advertising should draw attention, make you think and/or say something.  Jeseok Yi (aka Jeski), a Korean designer currently pursuing a Master of Fine Arts at Yale and legend of contests (winning many every year), does a little bit of everything.  His work is mostly focused on public service over commercial advertising because he feels that "making poor people happy might have a much bigger impact than making happy people a bit happier."  He has created ads (published and for contests) that include anti-smoking, environmental pollution, accessibility for the disabled, food donation and anti-war campaigns, to name a few.  Aside from making a statement, he also successfully incorporates existing functional structures into many of his ads, helping to stop traffic in order to take a closer look.
Here are a few of my favorites.
"What Goes Around, Comes Around"- Stop the Iraq War

"Air Pollution kills 60,000 people a year"
Ad campaign for National Resources Defense Council

"Place Food Here"- Tray placemat
City Harvest partnered with restaurants to deliver un-used food to hungry children.

"The more you smoke, the less you celebrate"
Anti-smoking campaign for American Lung Association

 "For some, It's Mt Everest"
 Help build more handicap facilities

And, although, most of his advertising is for public service, non-profit organizations, it doesn't mean he can't create a fun, eye catching commercial advertisement also. Check out the scrumptious video below!

dreamy Diana

After a year and 4 months, I finally got the first roll of film from my Diana F+ Lomography camera developed.  While there were only 9 developed images in total, there were a few fun shots!  Thanks Carrie for this great gift!

Back in the early ‘60s, the Diana camera was a cult legend, famous for its dreamy, radiant, lo-fi images. The Diana F+ is a reproduction brought to you by Lomography!
Love that Lomo!!

Polaroid goes Gaga

The first Polaroid Grey Label by Haus of Gaga product will hit the market in June.  It is called the GL10 Instant Mobile printer and is the next generation of the Polaroid instant printing line.  Marrying the convenience of today's digital images and the original Polaroid instant experience, the 15-ounce printer, about the size of a paperback book, works from most mobile phones wirelessly via Bluetooth and from most digital cameras, Windows PCs and Macs via a USB cable.  3 x 4" photos print with the classic Polaroid border in less than one minute.  Besides printing with the Polaroid border, it also offers a wide range of custom designed borders or the option of printing with no border.
I think one of the best features of this product is that it prints without ink using 2nd generation ZINK® Zero Ink® Printing Technology from ZINK Imaging. Inkless printing embeds color into the paper - no ink cartridges or ribbons needed!  It's rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery fully-charged can produce only about 35 prints though.
ZINK 3×4” Paper (price to be announced)

When Polaroid could have rolled over and died, they stepped it up and adapted to the ever changing, digital technologies.  Only downfall- this printer doesn't work with the iPhone, but I'm sure it will only be a matter of time until Apple wants in too.

Fun Together

On a gloomy, rainy Saturday, the Providence
Place Nordstrom store window gave me something to smile about!  It is really fun and eye catching and when most stores just have standard mannequins dressed in normal clothes, this window surely stands out.  Although it doesn't showcase clothes, it manages to display somewhere around 40 different accessories.  In an economy where people may not have a lot of money to spend, accessorizing has become extremely popular.  Changing up the jewelry, scarves, belts and bags can make an outfit feel completely newWalking passed this window definitely made me want to go into the store... and I walked out with new sunglasses, earrings and a necklace.  Good job Nordstrom!

On Earth Day... throw it out?

In honor of Earth Day, I thought I would post about something chic & eco-friendly.  This biodegradable disposable tableware by WASARA is made entirely from tree-free renewable materials (sugar cane fibers, bamboo and reed pulps- also meaning they can stand up to heat).  The Japanese designed line is compostable yet sturdy and is minimalist yet interesting.  Each piece has subtle curves making them extremely unique and beautiful.

Because the line includes different sized square and round plates, a variety of bowls, tumblers, wine cups, coffee cups and trays, they are perfect for any occasion!

Although you may not want to, go ahead and throw them out!

Realistic America

Lee Price, an American oil painter, creates photorealistic paintings that are mostly self-portraits of herself, binging on junk food. In the new print issue of Bust magazine, Price talks about how her work explores body image, feminism, and America's cultural relationship to food.

Each of these works are sad in context yet beautiful as Price creates such an unbelievably realistic painting that at first glance, I was sure was a photo.

With a culture so obsessed with body image mirrored with an ever-growing obesity issue and food being used for comfort rather than necessity, these paintings really do seem to capture the American reality.

For the rest of her work, go to her website.

Damn Fine Tins

Andrews & Dunham know that a great tin will bring great tea sales!  Their limited edition series tins are uniquely designed for each tea and seem to sell out quickly.  Not only are their tins gorgeous, but they also score bonus points for adding temporary tattoos and fun stickers to some varieties!

These, now sold out, tins were their first series on the market.  It seems they have only sold 7 series but as long as they keep coming up with these beauties (courtesy of design studio Aesthetic Apparatus) I see them creating many more!

To check out all 7 series, go to http://damnfinetea.com/.

Mmmm...

This porcelain jewelry looks so good you wish you could eat it!  The Norwegian duo, Maiken and Siri of TinyTasty, make miniature home-cooked meals into a delicious accessory.  Their line includes, but isn't limited to, mouth watering rings, earrings, necklaces and cufflinks.

Each amazingly detailed piece is hand made making the tiny meals one of a kind.

My favorite pieces are the fruit salad ring and waffle earrings shown here, but others include their salmon and salad rings, chocolate cake hair pin and waffle brooch!
Check out their entire Etsy store,

For food and jewelry lovers alike, these tiny tasties are sure to make you smile!

on the FLIPP side

My talented friend, Jo-Anna Cassino, has opened her own salon, Flipp, in Providence, RI!

It's a very cool, retro-modern space located on Transit Street on the East Side.  She is still in the process of setting it up but it's coming together and will be amazing when it's complete.  Besides being a hair salon, they also have reflexology and massage therapy and will eventually be a place for local artists to showcase their work.  While you wait, you can enjoy a homemade tea!  Book an appointment online (http://www.flippsalon.com) or find them on Facebook.

starting over

OK... so my first attempt at the blog was an epic fail.  I posted 4 times and then just stopped.  I am forgetting about round one and am starting over.  This time I will succeed!
